Nidhi Sahayak – By Seva Tarang Foundation
Nidhi Sahayak
Seven years since the finance minister announced the Social Stock Exchange (SSE), it has seen only 14 listings and about ₹41.15 crore raised. While NPOs cite concerns such as lack of reach to investors, fear of excessive reporting, and compliance notwithstanding, the SSE still offers a valuable alternate funding avenue worth exploring. The advantages, strategic and tactical, of using the SSE far outweigh the concerns, which can mostly be addressed through effective awareness creation and handholding.

Top 5 reasons for NPOs to get listed on SSE
Diversification of funding sources
In the early stages, organisations rely on individual donations or government grants, while mature ones (5–7+ years, ₹5–7 crore+ funds) depend mainly on CSR and FCRA. But overdependence on Government regulated funding sources is risky.
Getting ready for the future
The Government may soon mandate larger or
specific projects to list on the SSE, with CSR eligibility linked to such listings, prompting many organizations to join early, anticipating future funding to flow through the SSE.
Improving Credibility
SSE listing involves rigorous due diligence, financial audits, and public social impact disclosures, enhancing an organisation’s transparency and credibility. Such listed NPOs gain greater trust from donors and all stakeholders.
Developing capabilities in impact measurement, accountability, & transparency
Well-managed organizations with a progressive outlook, good quality donors, and a listed status have a better chance of recruiting good talent and retaining them.
Developing a completely new source of investors
Investors on the SSE belong to categories such as Family Foundations, Family charity trusts, HNIs, and Ultra HNIs. NPOs get to explore these new donor avenues.

NPOs must recognize that while funding will grow, it will come with tighter controls and transparency demands. The sector must diversify beyond CSR and FCRA by adopting models like SSE listing. Greater participation will, in turn, compel policymakers to act and address sector concerns.
